Refill Ink Cartridges Tips

The computer printer ink is usually very expensive. Due to the small sizes of the printer ink cartridges and the volume of jobs to be printed, the ink easily gets exhausted, creating a need for a cheaper alternative- the refill ink cartridges. You will find refilling your ink cartridge easy if you follow these steps:

• Purchase the ink refill kit from any office supply store around. The price of an ink refill kit costs about half the price of an average new printer cartridge.
• You will need a roll of paper towels, your kit and some clear scotch tape. Place them on a large flat working surface, maybe a table or desk.
• Take out the empty cartridge from your printer, and close the lid. Wear a pair of disposable plastic gloves on your hands while you work with the ink.
• Fold the paper and towel half twice. Work on the paper towel to catch any leaking ink and Place the empty cartridge on it.
• You can get more tips from the refill kit instruction manual to learn how to refill your particular type of cartridge.
• Find the fill holes at the top of the cartridge. Feel the depressions by rubbing your finger across the label, and then with a sharp pencil, pierce the refill holes.
• Apart from the black, we have other three colors of ink, which are cyan, magenta, and yellow. With the kit instructions, you will locate which hole to insert each color. You can also identify the colors by the markings on the refill ink cartridges holes. However be sure they were correctly placed. So as not to put the wrong colors into the cartridge ink chambers.
• Use the long needle on the refill ink bottle on the correct hole, and draw out the appropriate ink.
• Add the ink slowly, watching carefully to be sure that you do not over-fill it.
• As soon as you see a bit of ink oozing out of the hole, stop quickly. Then slowly release the air, without letting go of the bottle, sucking back a little ink out of the refill ink cartridges.
• Use the paper towel to daub the cartridge contacts. Then, use a piece of clear scotch tape to cover the hole. Be sure that the ink no more leaks out of the top holes. Be careful also, not to cross contaminate the colors.
• Repeat the same steps for the other colors.
• When you’re done refilling all three colors, carefully clean the cartridge print head on the folded piece of paper towel. Continue doing it until you see an even stripe of three colors appearing on the towel. That shows it has stopped bleeding.
• Place back the ink cartridge into the printer. If you install a leaking refill ink cartridge into the printer, it will not work properly.
• Print immediately to get the ink flowing. You can print several test pages. Preferably print photos with many colors, if you just refilled a color ink.
Refill ink cartridges may differ according to printers and refill ink designs. Browse the manual for effective refilling.

Refill Ink Cartridges Problems

Refilling ink cartridges is an easy way to save money and to help reduce waste in the environment. When you think about it, it is a very simple concept. All you have to do is put new ink in the holes that are out of ink, right?

I remember the first time I ever tried to refill ink cartridges. I went to the store and bought the refill kit myself, knowing that I could handle such a mundane task. Hours later and covered with ink, I was back at the store to buy a new cartridge for my printer. The clerk just smiled because I wasn’t the first to return covered in ink.

How could I mess up such an easy task? The instructions were very clear about what I needed to do to fill the cartridge, but they neglected to inform me of the little tricks necessary to ensure success.

First, I diligently read the instructions and inventoried the refill kit. I pulled the sticker off the top of the empty color cartridge, set the cartridge on my table, and inserted the syringe inside the cartridge. Next, I pressed the plunger and squirted cyan ink deep into the foam. This was easy.

However, I squirted the ink too fast and the foam didn’t absorb it fast enough. The blue ink overflowed the top hole and ran down the cartridge, across my fingers, and onto my wooden table, causing permanent stains. After cleaning up the mess, I squirted a little slower and things went better.

Next, I tried the magenta ink. I stuck it into the next hole in the lid. No problems. Then the yellow. I squirted a little ink out before I got the syringe into the hole. Yellow ink flowed into the other two holes I had filled. I managed to get the yellow filled without more problems.

Then, I noticed that the bottom of the cartridge was leaking onto the table, causing further stains. By now, my hands were covered in all colors of ink and my table was ruined, but my cartridge was filled and I had saved some money.

I plugged the refill ink cartridges into my printer and printed a test page, proud of my accomplishment. To my horror, the test page was a purplish brown and no matter how many times I tried to clean the cartridge the colors remained the same.

I returned to the store and bought the correct cartridge for my printer and swore that I would never try to refill ink cartridges again. Fortunately, I never listen to myself. I refill my cartridges all the time now and I am very careful to keep the ink where it belongs because I have learned the hard way how not to refill ink cartridges.
